Lake Towuti is a tectonic basin, surrounded by ultramafic rocks. Lateritic soils form through weathering and deliver abundant iron (oxy)hydroxides but very little sulfate to the lake and its sediment.

Allopatric speciation through the complete cessation of gene flow in geographically fully separated areas has been the dominant view of speciation over the past six decades (Turelli et al., 2001).

Studies of iron production are based on the understanding and comprehension of chemical and mineralogical research for debris, including iron metal produced, slag, ore, furnace lining, technical ceramics, and other relative materials from the smelting and/or smithing sites (Bachmann, 1982; Bayley et al, 2008; Tylecote, 1962; Tylecote, 1986).

Kompleks Danau Malili merupakan untaian danau yang terdiri dari Danau Matano, Danau Mahalona, Danau Towuti, Danau Wawontoa /Lantoa, dan Danau Masapi yang terletak di Kabupaten Luwu Timur, Sulawesi Selatan.
Nama Malili juga merupakan nama ibukota Kabupaten Luwu Timur, yang terletak di ujung utara Teluk Bone.
