Ekositem Danau sangat mendukung keanekaragaman hayati yang luar biasa dari spesies endemic air tawar, yang mulai terancam kepunahan sebagai akibat dari berkembangnya spesies ikan invasidan pencemaran lingkungan. Kita tidak mengetahui jenis spesies ini dari ancaman yang mereka hadapi sebagi potensi kepunahannya. Konservasi perlu dilakukan di kawasan danau dan meskipun danau ini terletak dalam kawasan pemukiman atau berdekatan dengan kawasan lindung, tujuan pengelolaan saat ini untuk menargetkan konservasi spesies air tawar.

Kabupaten Luwu Timur merupakan salah satu kabupaten yang ada di Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan yang memiliki potensi sumberdaya perairan umum yang tinggi dan kaya akan sumberdaya hayati flora dan fauna. Kabupaten Luwu Timur memiliki beberapa danau yang besar diantaranya adalah Danau Matano.
