The relationship between biodiversity and productivity has been extensively studied in order to understand the interactions and interdependence of processes regulating the composition and abundance of species in aquatic ecosystems. Many studies have focused on factors determining the temporal and spatial variability of plankton (Talling, 1957; Hutchinson, 1967) with an emphasis on temperate lakes.
